Our latest discovery is Il Tavolo Verde, a very special, unclassifiable, fascinating, unique place. Hidden in a quiet street but strategically located, this café and antiquity store is very close to two of our all-time-favorite spots in Madrid: the Retiro park and the brand new National Archaeological Museum, both places one cannot miss in Madrid. It is the perfect place for a stopover before or after getting lost discovering and falling in love (again) with Madrid.

From the moment we crossed the door, we felt a special kind of charm, and it all made sense when Martina and Leo told us their story. This lovely couple has created, with an infinite dose of love, patience and good taste, a space of their own where they share their creativity and bring together their passions: cooking, travel and antiques. They chose an old atelier that had been closed for years and transformed it into an “open home”, café and store that is, above all, a meeting point where you feel right at home, where they share delicious food, inspiration and treasures found in their travels around the world.

Upon entering we found a cafe with several tables, including a dreamy, huge wooden table that sits around 10 people, and a counter that reminds to a wonderful old bakery, showing spectacular cakes fresh from the oven (the pumpkin and chocolate bundt cake is such a delicacy). They prepare daily all kinds of delights and open from 10 am to 8 pm serving breakfast, lunch and snacks based on organic ingredients and vegetables from their own vegetable garden in Guadalajara. The only thing that they don’t prepare in their oven is the bread; instead, they bring it every day from our favorite bakery: Panic. Homemade, healthy and tasty, mostly vegetarian and seasonal cuisine. Il Tavolo Verde is “comforting”, in every single way…

But there’s more: the “backstage” hides a surprise, an antiquity market with beautifully restored furniture and all kind of objects for the home that they have found in markets across Europe, from wooden tables to mirrors, lamps, porcelain dishes, glasswareThey also sell beautiful things from special brands that value craftsmanship, natural materials and great quality, such as La Costa del Algodón lingerie, organic tea from Les Jardins de Gala, wonderful cookbooks and illustrated children books, or flowers, coming from one of the most beautiful flower shops in Madrid: Fransen et Lafite.

Each visit becomes a moment of inspiration and happiness. A place where we are definitely always eager to return.

Il Tavolo Verde is located in calle Villalar 6, Madrid. Metro stations: Serrano (Line 4), Banco de España and Retiro (Line 2). Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday, from 10am to 8pm. Closed on Sunday and Monday, and also from November 21 to December 2, 2014Martina and Leo are touring Europe in search of new treasures. Contact and reservations: +34 91 805 1512.

Something must have this Lebanese restaurant that began in Sanchinarro (in the suburbs of Madrid) if they were selected for taking care of gastronomy of the Arab House. This cultural center is located inside an impressive building that is worth visiting, not only for the many cultural proposals but also for being situated in a beautiful location, right in front of the Retiro park. And one of its attractions is its restaurant, Shukran, for their delicious Lebanese cuisine and stunning terrace. But today we’re talking about their brand new local: Shukran Express. Right in front of Las Ventas this small take away offers mostly low-cost menus (for around 10 euro), but you can also stay and have a bite and a drink in here; the restaurant itself is tiny but invites you to stay in one of their tables next to the huge windows, or on the terrace overlooking the bullring, which illuminated at night is almost magical.

Besides all this, the best of Shukran is the food, which is the same (with a slightly smaller menu) than in their locals in Sanchinarro and the Arabic House. Apart from the best-known Lebanese tapas such as hummus (the best we’ve tested), or falafel, we’ve loved their salads,  their Lebanese wraps or pizzas, such as the one with thyme oil or Lebanese cheese which gives them a special flavour very different from the classic Italian pizzas. They also offer breakfast with Lebanese sweets (that you can also take as dessert) and menus that come even cheaper. For those of you that are still unfamiliar with this type of food, it’s the perfect opportunity to try it in an informal way at unbeatable price. Moreover, since they have just opened they offer a free miniwrap you with your order until July 31, so hurry up and we’re sure you will want to go back!

Shukran Express is located at 200 Calle Alcalá, Madrid. Metro Ventas (L2 and L5). Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday 10:00 to 00:00, and on Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays’ eve until 01:00. You can see the information of its other locations here. You can also follow them on facebook.

As you know, in this blog we like to discover new special spots in Madrid, those coming  from people creating personal, small and original business. Accordingly, we would never talk about a place inside a mall, but today we’re making an exception for David Muñoz’ new spot. He has recruited an exceptional crew for this little corner on the 9th floor of one of the biggest shopping centers in the city: El Corte Inglés, in Plaza de Callao. StreetXO is the new experiment by this chef -who has already earned two Michelin stars in his main restaurant, DiverXO- and here he has picked a small group of young but wise cooks offering his asian fusion cuisine to the ones who, like us, love to eat but can’t afford going to expensive restaurants (here dishes are about 10-13 €).

Indeed, this is not your typical go-to restaurant: you will eat either at the bar with loud techno music or take your tray to one of the tables (if you’re lucky enough to get one) by the windows with one of the most incredible views of Madrid, overlooking the magnificent Gran Vía. Either way, although they call it “street food” and the cooks work frantically, these guys know very well what they do and how to do it. It might be a project behind a big name in a big mall, but the care and excitement are savoured in every detail.

The menu is short, but every dish is just great since there is a cook completely dedicated to it. 8 dishes, 8 cooks. Amazing, isn’t it? We’ve tried the beef in the picture (not always available), the justifiedly famous chilli crab, and the cocido dumplings (otherworldly). We warn you: some suggestions are risky but don’t doubt to ask for advice and trust them, you will get a tasty surprise.

StreetXO is located in El Corte Inglés (on the 6th floor, the “Gourmet Experience” area), in Calle Serrano 52, Madrid . Closest Metro station Serrano (line 4). More info on Twitter (@StreetXoMadrid).
