Manzana Mahou

August is a strange month in Madrid. Some say they love being in the capital in the summer, and indeed somehow there is something special in the solitude of the sidewalks that are usually crowded. Madrid in summer is hot and cramped, but when grades drop slightly at night, it can have something truly magical. Our main recommendation for those of you that had to stay in August in Madrid, or for those who already have come back to the city and have almost already forgotten holiday time is you to go out at night during the week to wander. Perhaps then you will end up in a bar or terrace you did not know or simply with a some free tables (for your surprise). There are many bars of Madrid that we like but do not insist too much because they are already well known or is very difficult to find a place. So we encourage you to go to those usually crowded  spots in these last days of August.

Manzana Mahou is an pop-up initiative we loved since it opened in the summer of last year. It is a terrace located in the privileged environment of Santa Bárbara Palace, built by the architect Juan de Madrazo y Kuntz in the nineteenth century. The top Spanish beer brand “Mahou” is behind a project harboring some of the best hosts in every corner of this huge space, which will be open until September 24. The terrace and the small but excellent menu is provided by the people of El Viajero (a legendary bar with a rooftop in La Latina neighbourhood) and the chef Abraham García, from Comala. We tried the guacamole with plantain, originally tasty, and some “entrepanes” (sandwiches). Everything tasted great. We also loved something they also offered last year and have fortunately repeated this summer which is the brunch / snacks from Taberna La Carmencita (Libertad 16), from which we are absolute fans and encourage you to go asap if you don´t know it yet.

If you go during the day, you can also enjoy some of the new activities they´re planning this summer in the interiors of the palace. There is an exhibition hall (Mimub room) where you can buy exclusive items for home; and soemthing we´ve loved: “Mahou bookshop”, a bookshop by Top Books and one of our favorite publishers, Lunwerg. On the first floor there´s also a room where picnics are held in the evenings from Thursday to Saturday. You can check the whole programme of activities here.

Manzana Mahou is one of the top trendy terraces this summer without any doubt, but none of this would be worth if it wasn´t because they have really managed to offer a cozy space in the middle of the Plaza de Alonso Martinez, and most importantly for us with a welcoming, warm service service that can not be more helpful, smiling and friendly, even when having to cope with a crowd. Take advantage of these last days of summer to find a place without having to wait for hours, you won´t regret it!

Manzana Mahou is located in Santa Bárbara Palace, Hortaleza street 87. Hours: from Monday to Sunday  11:00 – 0:30h (terrace). Opening hours in the interior rooms are 11:00 – 21:00h. You can have a look at the activity programme in their website, Facebook or Twitter . Reservations are held in “Experiencias” section on the website.

  1. I do not even know the way I ended up here, however I assumed this post was once great. I don’t realize who you’re but definitely you’re going to a famous blogger should you are not already. Cheers!
