Si te gusta viajar, tienes que conocer La Ciudad Invisible. Este café librería especializado en viajes es un lugar inolvidable, un remanso de paz escondido en pleno centro de Madrid, en una callejuela entre Ópera y Callao. De vez en cuando hay que perderse para encontrar tesoros como éste, que aunque acaba de abrir sus puertas hace menos de un mes, es tan acogedor que parece que llevase aquí toda la vida.

La creación de este espacio genial es obra de cuatro amigos trotamundos y emprendedores que tuvieron la gran idea de crear un punto de encuentro para viajeros donde compartir experiencias y consejos mientras te tomas un café y echas un vistazo a alguna de sus guías o navegas por internet -el wifi está incluido-. Si quieres viajar, y tienes claro tu destino -o quizá no-, ellos te ayudarán a prepararlo o te pondrán en contacto con alguien que ya haya estado, porque en internet está toda la información pero no hay nada como un buen consejo en vivo y en directo. Se trata de un lugar para viajeros, que no turistas, para los que disfrutan del viaje antes, durante y después.

Para hacer realidad este proyecto han trabajado mano a mano con Triscaideca -una pareja de interioristas con mucho talento y buenas ideas a los que auguramos un futuro brillante- y nada menos que BoaMistura, que ha diseñado y pintado su precioso logo. Entre todos han creado un lugar donde te sientes como en casa a base de amabilidad, buen café, sabiduría compartida, sofás, mesas de madera, una estantería repleta de guías de viaje y un selecto hilo musical.

Como buenos creadores de redes, también organizan intercambios de idiomas, proyecciones y debates. La planta baja es un espacio perfecto para organizar eventos, así que si quieres compartir tus experiencias viajeras o tienes alguna otra idea, no dudes en hablar con ellos porque estarán encantados de ponerla en marcha. También puedes colaborar con su bookcrossing particular, donando las guías de viaje que ya no vayas a usar. Además viene bien saber que La Ciudad Invisible casi nunca duerme y puedes visitarla desde primera hora de la mañana hasta bien entrada la noche; preparan desayunos, comidas, meriendas, cenas y copas, porque con los viajes ya se sabe, todo es empezar… Nosotras le auguramos larga vida y volvemos, ¡seguro!

La Ciudad Invisible está en la calle Costanilla de los Ángeles 7, Madrid. Metros Ópera (L2 y L5) y Callao (L3 y L5). Está abierto todos los días salvo el lunes, de martes a jueves de 11h a medianoche; viernes de 11h a 2:30; sábado de 12h a 2:30 y domingos de 12 del mediodía a 12 de la noche. If you love travelling (and we’re sure you do) you must discover La Ciudad Invisible, the Invisible City. This café bookshop for travellers is an unforgettable and peaceful place, right in the heart of Madrid, hidden in a narrow street between Opera and Callao. It has been open for less than one month but it’s so cozy and warm that it seems to have been here for a lifetime.

Four entrepreneur globetrotters are behind this wonderful project, based on the idea of creating a meeting point for travellers, a place to share experiences and advice while having a coffee and taking a look at their guides, or surfing the web – free wi-fi is included. If you are planning to go on a trip, they will help out or find someone else who has already been there, just to share valuable information on a face-to-face conversation.

To make this dream come true, they have hired greatly talented people: Triscaideca -a couple of interior designers with a promising future- and the amazing BoaMistura, who designed and painted their beautiful logo. All together have created a space where you feel right at home, with a great dose of kindness, good café, food and drinks, shared knowledge, comfy couches, wooden tables, shelves full of guides and great background music.

They love networking and bringing people together, that’s why they also organize language exchange sessions and debates. The basement is a perfect spot to organize this kind of events, so if you have any idea or just want to share your travelling experiences, don’t hesitate to tell, they will be glad to work it out. You can also collaborate with their own bookcrossing project by giving away the travel guides that you are not going to use anymore.

We love their philosophy that is willing to support a different kind of tourism, a more responsible and ethic one and also more interesting and sustainable, so our trip is not only a great experience for us but also for the world around. La Ciudad Invisible is open almost always, from early morning til midnight. They prepare a good breakfast, lunch, coffee, tea and cakes, shakes and drinks. We are looking forward to go back really soon.

Parece que sí, el otoño ha llegado oficialmente a Madrid, y con él las ganas de cambiar terrazas y picnics por cafés y sofás. Una buena forma de no acabar hablando de “la crisis” por enésima vez es mantener ocupada la mente y las manos en alguna labor, digamos, creativa.

Así fué como hace unas semanas nos apuntamos a un taller en el LabDIY (si sois almas crafties, seguidles la pista) y descubrimos el fascinante arte de la caligrafía; mientras tanto, nuestras vecinas tejían bufandas y tras varios intentos fallidos, nos hemos propuesto aprender este año, de una vez por todas. Inmediatamente nos acordamos de nuestra oveja negra favorita, el lugar donde sabemos que vamos a encontrar todo el material y conocimiento necesario para iniciarnos en estas labores: Black Oveja.

Seguro que no os descubrimos América con esta tienda-taller, pero no estaba aún en nuestro inventario y qué mejor momento para dedicarle su merecido momento de gloria. Para quien aún no lo conozca, Black Oveja es una tienda-taller repleta de telas y lanas preciosas, todo tipo de instrumentos para tejer, coser y bordar, y un montón de cosas bonitas traidas desde Japón y muchos otros rincones del mundo. El local es uno de esos sitios donde te quedarías a pasar la tarde con un buen té, y lo puedes hacer porque casi todos los días dan alguna clase donde puedes aprender a hacer punto, ganchillo, coser, bordar y mil cosas más.

Detrás de este proyecto están Merche y Alfonso, dos almas gemelas creativas que con valentía y amor al arte pusieron en marcha su idea, y que en sólo un año ya es referente absoluto en Madrid. Un lugar genial que os animamos a descubrir, si no lo habéis hecho todavía.

So it seems fall is oficially here in Madrid, we are waving goodbye terrazas and picnics and looking forward for sofas and cafes. A good way to spend the evening and avoid bringing up another conversation about the crisis is keeping hands and mind occupied in a creative business.

That’s how we got, a few weeks ago, to a calligraphy workshop at LabDIY, a great place for crafties (check it out here). Our neighbours were knitting their own scarves and we thought it was about time we learned too. That’s when we thought of Black Oveja, the place where we knew we would find everything we need, from the tools to the wool and the necessary knowledge to get the party started.

We’re sure most of you are already familiar with this atelier & store, but it is without a doubt worth its own place in our inventory. For those who still do not know, Black Oveja is a store that provides best quality wool and fabrics, all kinds of tools for knitting and sewing, and a lot of beautiful things, many of them imported from Japan, USA, Germany and France. This is one of those places where you could spend the whole afternoon enjoying a good tea while learning to knit, crochet or sew and have a great conversation at the same time.

Behind this great place there is great people: Merche and Alfonso, two creative souls that launched this project just one year ago and made it become a reference for crafties in Madrid and Spain. A place to learn and enjoy.

En plena revolución de los mercados (y no financieros, sino los otros, los que nos gustan: los de abastos) en Madrid está sucediendo algo extraordinario. Más allá de las transformaciones de mercados emblemáticos en centros comerciales “gourmet”, nos hemos topado con dos mercados de barrio que se están renovando sin perder un ápice de su esencia, manteniendo su razón de ser, el de espacio de encuentro cotidiano para la gente del barrio: el Mercado de Antón Martín y el de San Fernando, a dos pasos el uno del otro, en el castizo Lavapiés. De ambos podríamos hablar largo y tendido y lo haremos poco a poco, pero por resumir, lo emocionante del tema es cómo están consiguiendo resurgir de sus cenizas sin perder su alma. Siguen siendo -y quizá hoy más que ayer- un lugar amable donde ir cualquier día, no sólo a hacer la compra y encontrar productos de calidad sin plastificar, a buen precio y con atención personalizada, sino también a pasar el rato charlando con el tendero o con el vecino y quedarse a tomar el aperitivo del fin de semana, tranquilamente, después de hacer la compra.

Detrás de este “milagro” hay gente luchadora y emprendedora que se lanza y pone en marcha sus proyectos, por idealistas y arriesgados que parezcan, en un mercado. Ya sea una frutería ecológica, una panadería artesanal, una tienda de accesorios para bicis, un bar con vino y aceite a granel, una floristería o una librería que vende “al peso”. Inauguramos hoy este homenaje a los mercados con un lugar verdaderamente único, una sorpresa en toda regla, una joya que rompe todos los esquemas mentales que tenemos en la cabeza asociados al “mercado”: Sandwich Mixto.

Este sandwich es una exquisita combinación que alimenta cuerpo y mente a base de ingredientes 100% caseros: libros autoeditados (fanzines que sólo se pueden encontrar aquí) y comida rica (incluyendo una famosa tortilla de patatas), todo envuelto en un espacio sorprendente, lo que un día debió ser una charcutería y es hoy un lugar inclasificable y genial. Virginia y su socio son un par de artistas que lo mismo te diseñan un libro, una web, un video, te sirven un buen café, una buena caña o un buen vino (con ayuda del sumiller Pedro de Diego) mientras te recomiendan un buen libro y te montan un concierto para animar el vermú del fin de semana. Si creíais que ya lo habíais visto todo en Madrid, venid a explorar el mercado y veréis que aún quedan mucho mundo por descubrir…

Madrid is living a “market’s revolution”, and while some traditional markets in the edge of disappearing have become touristic gourmet hotspots, we are more interested in those markets that are blooming with new ideas and keeping their roots at the same time. Right now, something great is happening in two of the oldest markets in Madrid: the Anton Martin’s Market and San Fernando’s Market, both in Lavapiés, a neighborhood in the very center that still keeps the traditional flavour. What’s exciting about them both is that new business are coming in -and of course, new people- and they live happily together with traditional stands such as groceries, fish shops and fruit stores. There’s something exciting for our generation in the idea of coming back to the markets, like we did when we were kids with our grandma’s… The idea of it, not just as a place to shop but also as a meeting point, a place for encounter.

This revolution is being made by common people, brave ones who believe in their projects and make them come true no matter how idealistic or risky they may seem, whether it’s an organic greengrocer’s, an artisan bakery, a bike accessory shop, a bar that sells wine and olive oil in bulk, a flower shop or a bookstore. We have plenty to tell but we are starting this series today with a truly unique place, a real surprise, a gem that brights and breaks all mindsets: it’s called Sandwich Mixto.

This sandwich is a delicious homemade combination that feeds both body and soul: self-published books (fanzines that can only be found here) and exquisite food and drinks (including a great spanish omelette), all wrapped up in a surprising place that once was a grocery and is now a great spot.

Virginia and her partner made their dream come true and founded Sandwich Mixto a few months ago. These two talented designers can do something great for you, either if it’s creating a book, a website or a video, serving great coffee and wine while recommending a good book and even organize great concerts on saturday afternoons. If you dare to think you had already seen everything in Madrid, come and explore these markets and you’ll see that there’s still a lot to discover out there…
